Winter Worries?
Good advice and an assesment of your own garden and lifestyle is an important factor. Conservatories, greenhouses etc are not necessary with many hardy exotics. (Having these will increase the range of plants you can easily look after)
Palms, bananas, tree ferns, bamboo, gingers and many others will overwinter with very simple protection (if any). Position and a sharp eye on the weather forcast can help a great deal!
People will find their own way of protecting their prize plants. Some may need under cover protection, but only during severe frost. A spare unheated room with a window, a shed, barn, garage or unheated greenhouse.
Some plants are not as sensitive to frost as they are to prolonged cold rainy days and survive well in the dry of a cold greenhouse or similar. The AGAVE springs to mind. Other plants will need to be wrapped. Bananas, for example, can be 'boxed in' using a variety of methods. Chimney pots, drainpipes, wooden panels etc, all filled with straw. All these structures must allow 'airflow' - polythene or bubble wrap are not recommended.
In spring and summer your exotic garden will reward you for any work done during the cold weather. Exotics blend perfectly with all other garden plants and benefit from being mixed with colourful blooms . They can add structural height, leaf form and sound (from the wind) and they reflect light and shade . There is no doubt that afew well placed exotics in your garden will add a sumptuous feel and excitement that did not exist before. A wider selection and good availability of plants from all over the world always makes a visit to your local specialist a thrilling experience. Enjoy it !!!!
